In and Out...

So I'm sitting here trying to figure out, what is trendy right now? Usually, I don't think about these things, I just know. But I'm super confused by what's selling on Etsy these days. Past trends like mineral make up, owls, sparrows, vintage collaborations, don't seem to be selling as well. Is it a general market recession? Or has the tide turned on these once popular items.

I would love to get some input on what's selling for you. Please leave your comments here. Also, what's in? What are those young folks doing these days??? LOL

Wholesale and The Small Indie Business, Is It Worth It??

Recently, I've gotten a slew of requests, to do wholesale locally, and overseas. I absolutely love receiving them, and occasionally it works out. Most of the time however, it is larger businesses, just fishing Etsy for a deal on our handwork. Here are some of the problems I can see, when going into a larger wholesale deal.

1. Unless you plan on making 5,000 zipper pouches yourself in the space of a week, you probably won't be able to handle large requests.

2. Buying materials in bulk, so that you actually make money on the wholesale purchase, is a lot of money up front. And you will probably end up with a ton of excess, therefore, lose money.

3. Usually, wholesale would be 50% off your regular price. Unfortunately on Etsy, we all are so competitive for business, we are mostly underselling to begin with. Therefore, who can afford to take 50% off, on a small wholesale order?

4. As I said in number 1, due to the fact that we are small, usually individual, businesses, we cannot handle the volume of a retail store. Unless someone buys a large quantity of our product to begin with, other than getting our name out, wholesale will probably leave us in the red.

Some positive thoughts on wholesale, you can definitely get some great advertising and word of mouth from doing larger orders. Most B&M stores are very professional and accommodating to artists. They found us because they value handcrafted goods, and understand our pricing struggles. Also, they generally give a lot of leeway in production times and quantities.

In conclusion, take a chance with wholesale selling, but be careful not to lose more money than you make!

Stepping Down...

I have decided to step down from my leadership position with JET. I have been kinda absent on Etsy forums and all of our JET groups lately. Between my 3 shops, marketing/promoting myself, kids, house, and 6 pets, I barely have time to breathe!!

So in order to get my own house in order, so to speak, I've gotta let something go. Unfortunately, it has to be my beloved JET group. I will still be participating, and here for everyone.

Old Fashioned Internet Selling Advice, by JBT

Just felt like putting down some of my own successful ideas for selling, and buying supplies.

1. Buy in bulk! Wholesale is NEVER cheaper than bulk! You can buy anywhere on the internet and ask for a discount. Don't be afraid to send a message to sellers on ebay, or any other site for that matter. They want your business, and undoubtedly have a lot of items in stock. And the best part is, you don't have to report your taxes on bulk, like with wholesale.

2. Don't feel obligated to buy from friends, or on Etsy. I can testify to this, because I am a supplier there. You should research on your own what is the most for your money.

3. If/when supplies start to pile up, do not sit on them!! Open a de-stash store, and get rid of most of it. This goes with buying in bulk. You paid a lot less, but nothing should ever sit too long. Money should be constantly flowing in/out of your business.

4. Don't get stuck on a trend! I can't tell you how many times I thought that I had the market on a certain pendant, or style. I bought so many overpriced pieces, then I was stuck with them:( Sell it, and when it slows down, move it out of your store, ASAP. Believe me, we will soon have octopi necklaces selling on Etsy for $5!

5. Please don't worry so much about banners, avatars, etc. If someone buys from you, there are so many reasons why. Changing your avatar to a certain item in your store, could actually push buyers away. Why? Because we're all different in our tastes! Do what you want, if they like your items, they will buy it.

6. Confident business people, do not need a lot of forum support. What I mean by this is, don't post things like "does this look okay", "do you think people will like this", "why are my sales slow", "my banner is ugly", etc., etc. In real life, do you see people at Nordstrom asking their fellow customer's/employees if their store looks okay? Or if they are too ugly to sell expensive items? Show confidence in your product, and even the ugliest item becomes wanted! LOL

7. If it's not working, get over it. Sorry to be harsh here, but when you repeatedly try to sell unpopular styles, don't complain that there's no customers. I tried selling beaded pieces on Etsy when I started. Sure they were pretty, time consuming, and made of the best materials. But only other designers could appreciate them. The average customer wanted an octopi necklace! All I'm saying is, if you do this for the love of creating, make what you want. I completely support you:) But if you'd like to make a buck, you might have to ride the waves of Etsy/internet trends.

8. Pricing is a HUGE issue. Should I go higher, lower, etc. First off, be confident whatever you decide. Secondly, don't outprice your market. Although Etsy does have room for all prices, you cannot afford to sell the same types of items, for 3 times the price of other's listings. I can't say enough that jewelry sitting in your shop for over 3 months is a bad, bad, thing! You need to get it in/out in the smallest amount of time possible. If you're taking too long to create your items, paying too much for everything that goes into them, re-evaluate your situation on a weekly, if not daily basis. Another thing I want to say about this. Customers are not stupid! They see how much our supplies cost, and they can do the math. Selling my octopi necklace for $75 will not work!! LOL Same goes for simple earrings, not made with precious metals, or gemstones. I wouldn't pay $25 for kitty charm earrings, and customers shouldn't either!

As for upping prices, I can really see this as a good thing with certain sellers on Etsy. When you are a glassmaker, metalsmith, etc. You need to reflect your labor/craftsmanship in your price. This post is just about jewelry, but I have noticed that a lot of other artist's are really selling themselves short.

9. Customer Service is sometimes even more important than the actual product you're selling! Almost 100% of my customers are repeat buyers. I'm really proud to say that I bend over backwards for everyone that buys from my shops. I hear repeatedly on the forums, "I don't have time to convo every buyer", "I re-use packaging, and I don't care that it looks bad", I hate doing custom work", etc. Every buyer must be wooed, because their words are advertising for your next customer. Not only are we judged by feedback on Etsy, but we can bring in repeat sales, and new buyers, through our satisfied clients. So go that extra mile, swallow your negativity/annoyance with lame demands!! It's worth it in the end:)

10. Start out with great packaging/advertising. It doesn't take a lot of money to create a beautiful gift for your customer. Besides business cards, throw in a pin, nice bag, promotional item, etc. My customer's raved last year, when I gave them JBT buttons w/cool graphics. Now they ask my for my latest ones. It's a great feeling to have your own brand, and style of packaging. It also lets your customer's know that you are here to stay, and care about how you look.

So that's my top ten, please add your thoughts too. As always, thanks for listening!

Answers For Seller's Questions....
(That We Really Don't Want To Hear)

Question: There's a buyer for everything, right?

Answer: Not really, sometimes your stuff is just crap. Ouchy!

Question: Are my buyers just not on this site?

Answer: No, people are like sheep, they want trendy and cheap mostly, or go where the crowd is:(

Question: Should I raise my prices?

Answer: No you shouldn't, once you determine the point where you actually make money, stop there. You aren't attracting new customers this way, just shutting out people who can't afford to try your shop! However, if you've been in biz for awhile, slowly creeping up your prices is beneficial:)

Question: Should I calculate each individual country's shipping cost, per piece, and give them a fairer deal?

Answer: Nope, just set a standard price. It's so much easier, and people will mostly not want to convo/email you in the real world, they will just move on to another shop.

I felt it was time to come on here and put some words down. We have been suffering through a seriously scary time in San Diego. The upside of all this is that we are safe and sound, in our house. For those of you who know me, you understand that this praise is not the norm for me. But I actually cannot find anything negative to say about the wonderful response this city has seen.

Is Etsy getting enough searchers? I'm really concerned about it, because it seems that if I don't relist constantly, I have no customers. So, if relisting/listing = sales, but costs money, is it worth it? Between Etsy fees, paypal fees, supply costs, packaging, tools, time, non payers, and other overhead, I'm really questioning myself.

Does anyone else feel like they are working 24 hours a day/7 days a week for a couple of small sales? I was extremely busy in the Spring and early summer, now nothing! Of course, supplies are still going pretty strong. Maybe I won't bother to make anymore jewelry, and I'll just let it all run out?

I have decided to keep a Handmade Top Ten Seller's List. I think this will be beneficial, since so many artists are upset over vintage and supplies on Etsy.

Here are some reasons that I feel supplies/vintage should not be added to the Etsy Top Seller lists:

Supplies usually come in smaller quantities/prices and therefore appear to be selling better.

Vintage/supplies are not made by the seller, therefore, not really in the spirit of Etsy.

Sellers are frustrated enough having to compete with each other and hobbyists on Etsy. Why should they have to compete with non-handmade items for recognition?

I can understand the need for supply shops on Etsy. I'm not quite sure where Vintage fits in, but it's been on there since Etsy started, so they must have had a reason?

There is a huge problem on Etsy with communication between these groups of people and anything we can do now to promote and help each other out would be beneficial to us all.

That being said, I too sell supplies on Etsy and I would not mind non-handmade sites being taken off the wiki list.

Etsy is my full time job, and I need the income. My supply shop and jewelry shop have done extremely well and I'm truly grateful to everyone.

1. I have always enjoyed making things. Painting, ceramics, wood ornaments and my own greeting cards. I've always had a love for jewelry since childhood. I discovered jewelry making one day while in a local craft store. I thought that I'd give it a try and make gifts for family and friends, so I bought a load of beads, chain and wire and a few books. I had no idea at the time that I would love making jewelry so much!

2. I get a lot of inspiration from books. I usually just buy supplies that I think are beautiful then just keep arranging them until I like the look. I usually make things that I would wear myself. I get the most heartfelt feeling knowing that people love wearing my jewelry.

3. My favorite materials are wire, Lampwork glass, gemstones, semi-precious stones, Bali silver and crystal. I guess you can tell that from my designs, LOL

4. It would be nice someday to make my entire income from my jewelry but I think that is a long way off. But it is attainable with hard work. Since selling on Etsy and joining the JET street Team, my sales have increased and I'm getting my name out there.

5. Being a part of Etsy and a member of JET has been a fantastic experience. The community of Etsy is so friendly. I have been finding so many great handmade items to buy. Being a JET member is like having a huge family. We're all there for each other for inspiration, knowledge, kindness and friendship. I look forward to the weekly thread and talking with the friends I have made. I love being a JET member and can't wait to see what new and exciting things we can do as a group.

1. While hiking in the Adirondack mountains several years ago, I discovered garnet in one of the streams. I fashioned our very first piece of jewelry using it and have been going full steam ever since.

1. When/what inspired you to start making jewelry?Before motherhood I worked as a chef for about 9 years. That is a very creative profession. After I had my children I realized I was in desperate need of a creative outlet. I told my husband that jewelry making was something I was interested in but did not have a clue as to how to go about learning the craft. 2 days later an article appeared in my local paper about the “beading craze” and it mentioned a bead show that was coming to town. I decided that was my chance to see if it was for me and I have been hooked ever since.I have made things for friends for 4 years, but it wasn’t until last year that I decided to start selling earrings in a local boutique. My Fleur de Lis Charm earrings went over so well that I began receiving requests for more and more “themed” charm earrings, mostly school mascots. Thus Gypsy Charms Jewelry began.

2. Where do you get your ideas for your designs?For the contest piece I was inspired by my son. A lot of my jewelry comes from ideas they have. I also like doing custom work. I love trying to create a piece of jewelry to specifically match an outfit.Not to mention all the Etsy members that challenge and inspire me on a daily basis.

3. What are your favorite materials to work with?Most of my jewelry is made from Swarovski Crystals and Pewter charms. I like the elegance and sparkle. Lately I have been enjoying working with artistic wire. I have found using that to make rings is very relaxing and rewarding.I have just begun to work with a very rare collection of vintage glass Mardi Gras beads. Most of the strands were factory-made and hand strung in Czechoslovakia from the 1920’s to the 1930’s. At the onset of WWII, the factories were shut down, never to re-open. The beads were recycled by Krewe members and kept in circulation into the 1960’s. Some still retain the original “Imitation Jewellery” tags.

4. In the future, where do you want to be with your jewelry business?I would like to continue to sell my charm earrings. I am working with several schools to sell my earrings as fundraisers. I also would like to have more of my regional pieces in local boutiques and gift shops. The thing I am most excited about is the Mardi Gras bead creations I am working on. So many people lost their antique Mardi Gras collections during Katrina. These beautiful beads have been restyled for people to be able to wear a touch of New Orleans nostalgia

1. I started making jewelry when a friend showed me in 2000. She had recently learned jewelrymaking and she was SO enthusiastic about it that when she taught some of the rest of us, it was infectious! Ever since, I have been hooked. I love working with color, that is what inspires me.

2. I get my design ideas by bringing beads to the table and looking at them until a grouping strikes me. Then I fuss with them until I like the design. It's very unstructured.

How to start/run a successful Street Team on Etsy

I was just reading in the forums that sarahwearsskirts, our wonderful new Etsy Street Team go to gal, was posting this thread about how to start a Street Team on Etsy.

Since I have started 2 Street Teams with http://www.crescentmooncreation.etsy.com, CCCOE, and JET, I thought it might be helpful to add my two cents to the mix!

The first thing I recommend doing before you start anything, is to sit down and decide what the goal is for your team. It's the first question everyone will ask you, and it's good to have a prepared statement ready. Also, choose a name before posting the thread. It's hard enough to get a group started, but using the democratic process for everything, can hold your group up for weeks! If you don't know what name to pick, then of course, post for ideas.

After you've decided a name and goal, contact admin immediately! It takes a very long time to get a Street Team going and a page for it on Etsy. You need to get a jump start on this right away. Okay, so you've got a name, goal, and hopefully applied for Street Team recognition on Etsy. Now comes the fun! Start a thread calling for members, ask them for their shop names and URLS. I no longer ask for regular emails, many people feel spammed when they receive a lot of group messages, and the forums are just as good for getting the word out. It is very important that you keep a seperate, updated list of members. You will be referring to this all the time and admin likes to receive a good copy for the Street Team page.

So now you've got a Street Team, what's next? Well, depending on the goal's of the team, you want to start getting to work. I think the most important thing for all teams is to promote yourselves. There are so many ways to do this on the web, you should have no problem getting started. I use blogs, myspace, and my own personal blog and email list. Encourage all your team members to do the same. Remember to ask for help, let others keep track of individual sites, otherwise, it can be very overwhelming.

Another great way to market your group is to have a contest, sale, or giveaway. It encourages people outside of your team to visit your blogs, shops, etc.

JBT Top Ten Do's and Don'ts of Etsy

I was thinking this morning about Etsy and how much it has consumed my life. It's a managable thing, but it's taken me almost 6 months now, to figure out how to be profitable there. The following is a list of my top ten do's and don'ts for success on Etsy. I'm not saying I have all the answers, but I just wanted to pass on the personal knowledge that I've acquired.

The Don'ts

One thought on the forum, enter with caution!! Do not get caught up in what other seller's are doing or saying. Just be positive, add your items to posts, and for god sakes do not talk about religion or politics!! Remember, everything you say on the forum, stays on the forum forever!!

If you like recycling, that's fine. But if you send me a package that's dirty, disheveled, and not presentable, you will lose out on future sales.

Please, oh please, do not tell us too much about your personal life in your store or profile! Customers buy things because they feel that it will fit into their home, life, etc. They don't want too much background information, or they may decide it's a personality clash with your products.

When describing products, customers don't want to read about your personal musings on nature, colors, and childhood stories! They really want a great technical description, so they don't have to convo you!

Pictures say 1,000 words, so even if you take wonderful artistic photos, please put pictures that show all the angles of your actual product.

Don't ask your customers to contact you regarding shipping prices, choices of product, or customization. Spell it out for them somewhere on your site. I can guarantee that almost 100% of people (myself included), will run screaming from asking a seller questions.

Over promotion happens! It is extremely immature and irritating, to see people on MySpace telling us every time they have a new color for a $5 pair of earrings! This applies to email too. Sending out a monthly newsletter or an appropriate sales bulletin, will do the trick.

Do not let your shop ever have less than a full page of listings. Imagine going into a shop and only seeing 5 items? If you don't immediately like one, it's over for that store.

When answering customer questions, please use real words and terms. Even if they are a seller on Etsy, we all like to see grown-up behavior. No funny symbols, just direct answers, and polite words.

Please do not pretend you're an expert on everything! I am not an expert on anything! I admit when I've mislabeled, shipped incorrectly, or sent you a broken item. Accidents happen, we're all human, customers will respect your honesty more than excuses.

The Do's

If you want to make part-time money on the internet, work full-time. Want full-time income? You need to work 24 hours a day/seven days a week!

Blog, MySpace, Stylehive, Ebay, Technoratti, have your own personal site, etc. Live it, breathe it, and update it daily!!

You will always be an artist, even if you have reasonable prices:) Buy wholesale!

Do unto others... I would say that the first four months I was on Etsy, I spent 75% of my time helping others with Street Teams, graphics, listings, etc. You will be greatly rewarded for this and it feels good too:)

Join and/or start a Street Team.

You may hear people complaining about avatars, banners, etc. Stick with what represents you. Only you know what your company and style is.

Prices are personal and you shouldn't change them often. Different things command different amounts, but you should never start out with insanely high prices. Building a good customer base that trusts you takes years! Please don't scare customers off, list something for everyone's market.

Do take into account that if you want sales on Etsy, you might not have a product that is popular now. If you don't care about this, then please don't complain in the forums that you have no sales. If you do care, study stylehive, Etsy, and other trendy places for an idea of what is going on this season. FYI, I am not suggesting you copy others, just take a look at colors, season, lifestyles, and trends.

Have cut and dry policies in your store that are not too wordy. Don't change these unless it's necessary. Customers like consistancy, and they don't want a different shipping cost or return policy every time they visit you.

Give the customer their way. You may hate this particular customer, but you have to do it. They don't know you're seething inside, and it usually has a very positive outcome.

These are some of my best tips. I have to tell you that I wish I'd read them when I started! I have done most of the don'ts and I continue to remind myself not to repeat them! Thankfully, most other human's are forgiving:)

As you probably know I am working as the Coordinator of the Women's Centerat CCAC. The women who come to the Women’s Center are all ages (from 18 to60), are different races and are from different social economic status. The women receive free counseling, workshops, and referrals to community resources.

I have initiated a student club, Women on a Mission. The purpose of the club is to provide the women an opportunity to develop supportivefriendships, have leadership opportunities, and to have a way that thestudents can give back to the community. The students have support and a place to meet at the Women’s Center. However, the Women’s Center does not have funds available for the group.

My shop on etsy is Greenwillow Crafts. My name is Ann and I live in North Carolina. I have had my shop on etsy since last August, but I have been sewing and hand embroidering since I was a little girl, making cards for 6 years now, and taking photographs for about 5 years. Since I believe you can show love by the time and care you put into making something, I have always given my family and friends gifts I've made. And in the past 10 years, I have sold locally in art and craft shows. Now that I'm retired, I have plenty of time to put into my crafts. It still thrills me when someone likes something I've made enough to buy it.

Hi, my name is Michelle and I've been creating handcrafted jewelry for three years. I've just recently decided to try to sell some pieces, rather than just making jewelry for myself and family and friends. I just opened shop on etsy on April 10th and am loving the experience so far.

I try to keep my pieces fairly simple, and when I'm creating something new, I always ask myself, "Would I wear this?" I'm particularly drawn to creating things with sterling silver (it's so shiny!) and contrasting beads and stones. I think that small, freshwater pearls make great accents, and you'll find them incorporated into many of my pieces.

I specialize in making a variety of gemstone and glass beaded and wired artisan jewelry and other beaded things. I have a large selection of high quality beads and findings which I use to make the jewelry. My early attempts at jewelry making taught me how short the lifetime is for gold and silver plated findings (at least when I wear them) so in most cases I will use only sterling silver or gold filled parts. Open Letter to Etsy Admin:)

Dear Admin,

Could we please have our forum where we exchange ideas w/eachother and post our personal information closed off to customers? I think a seperate chat room for customers that we could also post too would be more professional.

This would definitely promote a more positive etsy vibe for all customers, including the ones that are easily offended. Thus, giving etsians less to argue amongst eachother about.

" I don't think Etsy is a place that will ever be fair to the satisfaction of many, in terms of the echelon of artistry, and whose works gets picked when and how. Some people are new to their craft and some people have been practicing for decades. Is there a higher level quality of art work made by a person who has worked on their art for many years? There is a great deal of difference and it shows..even digitally. As a member of CCCOE I will try to get treasuries into the future because I really love curating. Professionally I have curated for many years. Every other treasury I will dedicate a treasury to CCCOE artists. I would not have any fun at all curating if I just curated CCCOE artists when there are ETSY artists world wide. That would be torture for me. And no fun at all.

Art is one of the most competitive fields to play on there is. You have to develop a pretty tough hide to play on ETSY. You have to get tough to participate in any art arena that involves the public. Who gets picked to be in treasuries will never be fair. The choices are due to natural selection... legislating curatorial choices on ETSY to be any more fair than it already is, will never work, people would stop playing."

There is no longer a need to deny it, you want to call me out! Yes, I charge shipping! Is there a 12 step program on etsy I can attend that will convince me I'm wrong?? I absolutely love my customers and I feel the need today to defend my shipping practices.

When I started on etsy at the end of January, I was coming off a 2 year run on my own site. I had learned the ins and outs of internet promotion and pricing the hard way. Looking for a community to host my site and give me a better sense of belonging, I turned to etsy. Now etsy is not like having your own site or listing in an auction. But, you still call the shots for the policies and services you offer. Therefore, I thought it would be perfectly reasonable to continue charging my usual shipping fee that I had done for 2 years previous to this move. Unfortunately, etsy sellers felt that because they knew the actual postage for every single time zone on the planet, that I was overcharging. Nevermind that everyone else on the web is charging triple what most etsy sellers are. Or that all the high end jewelry sellers on etsy are completely outraged by low prices. How dare I ship for more than $1 at the most???

So now, I'd like to break it down for any of you that care to hear my side. I am here to please my customers and hopefully that will always include the wonderful sellers on etsy. However, I do have huge overhead costs. Let's take shipping a $2 pair of earrings for example.

Bubble Mailer - .35
Silk Pouch - .25
Plastic Bag - .05
Business Card - .05
Thank you Card - .05
Sticker - .05
Other etsy seller promos I insert - .05 (Exta Postage Costs)
Actual postage to U.S. (w/out etsy promos) - .39

So just my mailing materials alone cost me about $1.24. I am only charging $2 and this is for unlimited items! Most of my packages require more postage than this and supplies have cost me up to $8 out of pocket.

Let's consider my other costs in general,
Listing on etsy - .20
Materials - anywhere from .75 - $20.00
PayPal fee ?
Etsy selling fee ?

Would I be making any money at all were I to charge less than $2? Definitely not and there would no longer be a way for me to continue selling my jewelry.

I've also had some complaints regarding my overseas charge of $5. Well, let's be honest, you really have to make sure something is packaged well and shipped correctly when going to a different country. Since my prices are already more than reasonable, do you want to take the chance of the Post Office losing your item? Or would you rather have your jewelry at reasonble prices and reach you in tact?

Finally, I'd just like to say that a lot of people on etsy have sent me convos when I started regarding my prices being too low and my shipping too high. I am not trying to make up for my prices with higher shipping costs. If I did that, I would have to charge $10 to all U.S. customers! The reason for my low prices is simply this, I have been making jewelry for over 7 years now, I have great wholesale suppliers and I don't like to overcharge my customers. You can expect the same quality of jewelry in my shop as in a higher priced one.

I have been deeply moved by the thought that I might make a difference in the world.
Breast cancer runs in my family and I want to do what I can to help find a cure. So, I have decided to do something wild and crazy....
I am going to be walking 60 miles!!
I'm walking in November for a cause devoted to helping women discover breast cancer early enough to beat it and committed to finally finding a cure.
I have a lot of training to do in the next few months and I will be letting you know how it's going from time to time.
However, as a condition of participation, I must raise at least $2,200. Proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
